Workshop on Developing Floriculture Sector to meet the Export Demand
The Workshop on developing floriculture sector to meet the export demand was held on 10th October 2023 at SLCARP. The main objective of this workshop was to present issues faced by the floriculture industry during the pandemic situation and due to government policy changes. Dr. J. D. H. Wijewardena, the Chairman of SLCARP, welcome all the participants and explained the objectives of the workshop. Dr. (Mrs.) S. M. P. Chandra Padmini, DDRM, SLCARP, explained how SLCARP has helped to grow the floriculture industry.
The Director General of National Botanic Gardens gave an overview of the development plans for the floriculture industry over the following five years. Mr. Dilip de Silva representing the Floriculture Producers and Exporters Association, highlighted the key changes that is required in the sector to move forward. The Prof. Siril Wijesundara of National Institute of Fundamental Studies (Former Director General, National Botanic Garden) highlighted the need and significance of establishing a Floriculture Council. Ms. Isha Wijeratnam, Managing Director of Eco-Serene Biotech Pvt. Ltd., spoke on behalf of the private sector and expressed her gratitude for conducting research on the floriculture sector. The Additional Director General, Sri Lanka Export Development Board, Mrs. Malani Baddegamage, explained the potential of new markets and export facilitation.
Mr. Shantha Perera, representing the Sri Lankan Horticulture Association, explained how small-holder nurseries contribute to the growth of exports. The Chairperson of the Floriculture Producers and Exporters Association, Mrs. Thushari Weerakoon described the challenges encountered by the exporters when attempting to export their produce and potential solutions were discussed.
Subsequently, Dr. (Mrs.) S. M. P. Chandra Padmini, DDRM, SLCARP, gave the vote of thanks for the attendees for their participation and contributing their perceptive ideas.
